Caring for an elderly is not an easy job, we have to make them as comfortable and secure as possible. This can reduce stress for you. The more they feel protected, the less would be the likelihood of them becoming puzzled, violent, or troubled. We have to let them feel the quality of life and remember that money is not always the issue. More importantly is that they need to feel important, worthy, and needed still.
There are some trouble-free, little changes you can make to ensure a delicate level of ease for your elderly love ones.
1.) Communication: More than care they also need someone to talk to and someone who is interested in listening to their stories and triumphs in life. This is a starting point of creating a solid relationship and mutual respect with your elderly.
2.) Independence: We want them to be independent and do a simple task on their own. So together you can create a routine on the task they need to do. However, if the purpose is not properly set to your elderly they might be resentful, difficult to deal with and sometimes aggressive. Treat the elderly person in your care as if you were in their position.
3.) Health File: Start a medical file, keep copies of test results, and contact details about your doctor. Just use simple folder, binder or a removable drive to keep the information.
4.) Support: You are not the only one who is caring an elderly. You can talk to others who have been to similar situations, join focus groups whose objective is to improve the experience of the elderly. You can seek help from professional care givers for guidance so you can enhance your knowledge on how to take care of your elderly.
5.) Sharing of responsibilities: Have a discussion with your family members regarding care and share duties and responsibility in taking care of your elderly. Make sure to set a regular schedule to ensure that family members are really sticking to what they need to do. You don’t have to burden yourself to the entire task needed, use the help of your trusted family members.
6.) Large Number pads: If your love ones enjoys watching TV then buy a remote with large numbers. If you’re elderly can still use the telephone then buy an oversize number. Furthermore, use large digital clocks because it is easier to read than traditional clocks.
7.) Exercise: Regular exercise can prevent heart trouble. It can also reduce arthritis pain and depression. It can help older people stay dependent. They can try non strenuous exercise that falls under endurance activities: walking, swimming, or riding a bike which builds staying power and improves health and circulatory system.
8.) Spiritual quest: Elders need spiritual enlightenment, so we need to guide them in this area.
9.) Continuous education: Let them socialize with other elderly people by letting them join book clubs and any other areas of interest. They might also be interested in learning new things like playing games in the internet or chatting to love ones.
